Walk into almost any professional dressing room and you will see them: short socks with grip pads on the sole. In barely a decade, grip socks went from a training hack to standard kit. Here is what they actually do — and why control inside the boot matters.
What are grip socks?
A grip sock is a performance sock with silicone print on the sole and heel that increases the friction between your foot and the shoe. GEARXPro’s version, powered by SOXPRO™ grip socks, is engineered around a system called Grip:IN. The idea is simple: the sock is part of the boot system, not an add-on.
In football the grip sock is usually worn under a cut-down team sock, so the kit still matches while the grippy layer does the work next to the skin.
Why do footballers wear them?
The reasons stack up around one theme — keeping the foot locked to the boot:
- Traction, not slip. Silicone on the sole limits the foot sliding inside the shoe during acceleration, stopping and changes of direction.
- Sharper changes of direction. When the foot stays planted, more of each push reaches the stud, so cuts feel more direct.
- Less wasted energy. Micro-movement inside the boot is effort that never reaches the ground.
- Targeted friction control. Grip across the heel can counter lateral movement and reduce blisters on damp skin.
- A more precise fit. A locked foot makes a boot feel like it fits the way it should.
Do grip socks actually work?
There is real research behind the idea rather than just marketing. A team-sport grip-sock study indexed on PubMed measured in-shoe foot motion and change-of-direction performance instead of treating grip as a style claim. Sports podiatry, via the AAPSM, also treats hosiery as part of the footwear system: fit, moisture, friction and skin shear all affect the athlete inside the shoe.
Grip socks vs normal football socks
| Normal sock | Grip sock | |
|---|---|---|
| In-shoe slip | Largely unmanaged | Reduced by sole grip |
| Change of direction | Sock can shift on the foot | Foot stays planted |
| Friction & blisters | Variable | Targeted reduction (heel zone) |
| Fit | Generic | Left/right, zoned (SOXPRO) |
How to wear grip socks (the pro setup)
- Cut the foot off your team sock (or fold it back above the ankle).
- Pull the grip sock onto a bare foot so the silicone sits against your skin and insole.
- Pull the cut team sock over the top so the kit still matches.
- Hold it all together with sock tape or a tube around the ankle.
- If your socks are sided, match left and right — SOXPRO Classic is built differently for each foot.
How SOXPRO does it
GEARXPro is an Italian performance company, founded in 2018, built around the idea that the sock is part of the boot system. Its SOXPRO line places silicone grip arrows on the sole and heel, adds an elastic ankle band for stability and lightweight cushioning for impact, and builds each sock left- and right-specific. The socks are classified as Class 1 Medical Devices under EU regulation 2017/745 — a regulatory status for equipment, not a medical claim. For the full breakdown, see how Grip:IN is engineered.
Lock your foot to the boot
Are grip socks allowed in football matches?
Generally yes. Most competitions require the visible outer sock to match the team kit, which is why players wear a grip sock under a cut-down or full team sock. Always check your own competition’s kit rules.
Do grip socks stop blisters?
They can reduce friction in key areas — SOXPRO places silicone across the heel to counter lateral movement and reduce blisters on damp skin — but no sock removes blister risk entirely. Fit and moisture still matter.
Do you wear grip socks over or under your team socks?
Usually under: foot into the grip sock, cut-down team sock over the top, held with tape or a tube. The grippy layer needs to sit next to your skin and insole.
Are SOXPRO socks left and right specific?
Yes. SOXPRO construction is differentiated for each foot, with zoned grip, an elastic band for stability and light cushioning so support sits where each foot needs it.
Which grip socks should I start with?
For most footballers the SOXPRO Classic is the original match-grip sock; the range then splits by cut and sport. See the football selection.
